Big day of driving ahead of us today. We wanted to get to Kyle of Lochalsh (or thereabouts) and do the island of Skye tomorrow. We left Connel by about 9.30am and headed off in the direction of Fort William. The bridge we crossed looked pretty interesting:
We saw a sign for a castle, so of course we had to go and check it out. It’s called Barcaldine Castle is is a castle for hire from what I understood. It’s private property, so we couldn’t do anything but take photos through the fence. They had pretty spectacular views:
Between here and the next castle, which is Stalker Castle:
And more beautiful scenery:
And looking across the bay to Corran:
Inverlochy Castle was another ruin we couldn’t pass up seeing, followed by more beautiful mountain scenery:
Did someone say castle? Invergarry Castle. Then more scenery:
This was interesting – people have been leaving little stone buildings at this parking area. I don’t know what for or how long, but it was interesting:
And between here and Shiel Bridge:
And then: “There can be only one”. Eilean Donan Castle – the one used to film Highlander. We got there at 5.30pm, so it was too late to go in, but they had left the gate open so we could walk around without a ticket. Nice:
Next stop: Plockton! This was the location for the filming of Hamish MacBeth and no trip to Scotland would be complete without visiting here! The road to the village was a bit scary in places, but the views at the end of the village and its location, were just superb. The B&Bs were all booked out, except one which only had a small room out the back next to the kitchen. We took it though, rather than trying to find something elsewhere. And it’s Plockton! Loch Dubh! Yay:
We had dinner at the Plockton Hotel. I had the whole trout, and Daniel had the salmon fillet. Both were nice, but they were a bit stingy with the veges. All you got was some potatoes. Nothing else. Ah well…we enjoyed it. And an early night tonight!
