We were looking forward to our stay in the castle tonight, so it was going to be a short day so we could be there as soon as we could check in. Plan and reality didn’t coincide too well, once more. The day started off pretty wet and miserable, but it did improve fairly quickly – we had blue skies by lunch time.
We had a nice breakfast cooked by our host. He even joined us after we’d finished eating, and we drank coffee (tea in his case) together and chatted a while. He’s a champion ex-boxer and now is some sort of commissioner for the sport and travels all over the world with it. The B&B is his summer job and he’s running it for his daughter for when she comes back from South Africa, so that she has something to do and somewhere to live.
Anyway, we headed off to see the ruined Cathedral, which is very pretty. We didn’t bother going in, on his advice. You can walk all he way around it, so that’s what I did:
We drove in and parked, and then walked around a little while looking at pretty buildings and churches etc:
Our host had told us all about how good the ours etc are at Glenfiddich Distillery, so when we drove to Ballindalloch Castle and saw the sign for Glenfiddich not too far away, we did the detour. It turned out that the tours didn’t start til 12pm, being a Sunday, so we went to the nearby Balvenie castle:
The tour was quite good, though we didn’t actually like the Glenfiddich scotch enough to buy any!
We were a bit tipsy after the tasting, so had a bite to eat first. The food was sparse but delicious. Then we headed to Ballindalloch Castle. Entrance was 8.50 GBP, but it was worth it, I thought. It’s a very pretty castle The lawn was amazing and Daniel wanted to take it home:
After looking through the gardens, we headed off to Kildrummy. We passed through the Grampians, which seems to be a ski-ing area in the winter. It’s quite pretty, too:
We arrived at our castle, which is quite close to an old ruin of its predecessor, at about 5pm. The standard room was only 140GBP, as opposed to the 169 GBP quoted on the website, so that was good! I took some photos before dressing for dinner:
Dinner was 35.50 GBP per person for a three course meal. The food was really quite good. Dessert was Creme Brulee, which was the only reason I had dessert :-) Yummm.
