Daniel came and picked me up about 10.30am and we were off to Ronneburg castle in Ronneburg. It’s a pretty little castle that’s about 1000 years old. The trip there was like our travels in Scotland: “oooooh pretty! pull over here!”. We even decided to walk up the hill to the castle, so that I could take photos along the way (and also it was good exercise!).
There were a lot of poppies on the path up the castle, and since I love poppies and can’t manage to grow them at home, I photographed them here. They’re also popular with the bugs:
The old cemetery was quite lovely, and obviously in disuse:
There’s a hang-gliding centre at the top of the hill. The gently sloping hills either side make a good spot, I guess. They had a lot of difficulty getting away today, though. Several of them tried to take off but didn’t manage to do more than glide to the end of the field. Though someone pointed out to me that they were probably students and were meant to stop at the bottom…
The castle is a museum now, and the admission fee was a fairly reasonable 5 Euro each. The castle has seen different evolutions and additions through the years, and it shows. It’s being renovated bit by bit, so there’s new work all over the place.
We wandered through from room to room and up and down stairs, for a couple of hours, admiring the views of the castle inside and out, as well as some very nice furniture:
Daniel was put in the stocks for misbehaviour. Fortunately for him, I didn’t have any rotten vegetables on hand…
More of the castle:
Some views from the top of the tower. The first is of Frankfurt in the distance:
And more furniture:
And then there’s the torture chamber:
Next to the kitchen. Wouldn’t want to disturb the lords and ladies, after all!
There was a magic show for (not only) kids:
And the peacock was putting on a lovely show too:
We had a beer in the cafe, after deciding lunch was too expensive:
As we were driving back, we came across a beautiful forest, which was very difficult to capture:
Daniel dropped me off around 3.30pm and the family BBQ was already in full swing. Request a link if you’d like to see the photos from that!
